Ingenious Women Launch #ingw

Last week was the launch of the Ingenious Women initiative, a brilliant scheme run by the UKRC with funding from the Royal Academy of Engineering.

I was lucky to be chosen; in the end 20 women were chosen from over 100 applicants – I am sure that had a lot to do with who my employer is, no doubt it helps to have somebody from a F1 team on board!

Still its a fabulous thing to be part of, I went to the launch not really sure what to expect. In the emails and information I’d read about the scheme I knew it was all about learning how to promote women in engineering, and involved some tweeting and blogging but that’s about it.

As it turns out there is so much more to it that than that. There will be training on how to promote ourselves; there was advice from media mentors who were a mix of journalists, broadcasters, press officers, authors. Most importantly this whole support network that never existed before of 20 women who understand the problems faced by one of our group every day. As Mastercard would say – priceless!

  1. We really do need to stand up and shout about the exciting things we all get to do! Well done for standing out from the crowd. Great to hear there were a hundred applicants for the scheme, over the years women engineers have worked hard to keep their heads down. We all need to stand up and be counted:)
On Saturday WES is at the Science Festival with a panel of engineers talking about ‘My sparkling career’. Tickets are all gone but maybe some standing room and lots of sixth formers to be inspire. Looking forward to hearing more!! Ciao
